Cloth nappies undergo quite a bit of laundering in their lifetime. Follow our care instructions to get the most out of your nappies.
Follow the wash care instructions on the label.
Wash your cloth nappies a few times prior to use to increase their absorbency. To get them to full absorbency, you'll need to wash them ten times. If you can’t wait, you can use them after a couple of washes.
Fold back the hook and loop laundry tabs, otherwise, they will damage your nappies in the wash. Unfolded laundry tabs are a major cause of fabric balding so please, please use them.
Use reusable fleece or disposable nappy liners. These catch any poo (which then gets tipped down the loo) and protect your washable nappies. Plus, fleece liners are great for keeping baby's bottom dry.
Use a laundry mesh. It makes getting all dirty cloth nappies into the washing machine a doddle and it saves you from having to touch them.
Use non-biological powder. It’s better for baby's skin and there’s an enzyme present in some bio detergents which corrodes bamboo fibre and cotton.
Line dry whenever you can. Not only will sunlight bleach stains out of your nappies but the UV radiation will kill bacteria too. You can tumble dry our reusable nappies on a cool setting if needed.
Don’t use fabric softeners or liquid detergent. They leave a residue which coats the fabric fibres, decreases the absorbency of the towelling and affects the waterproofing.
Don’t soak your nappies in harsh stain removers. If you do have a pile of very stinky nappies and want to soak, don’t soak them for longer than 12 hours. Use either water or a mild solution of our Potion powder, which has been specially formulated for use with nappies.
Don’t use bio detergent, bleach or other harsh stain removers. They will shorten the lifespan of your fabric nappies and will void your guarantee.
Don’t use pastes of wash powder applied directly to stains, this is too concentrated.
Don’t boil wash or use the 'baby' wash cycle. These high temperatures are unsuitable for your nappies. If you’re worried about bacteria, leave your nappies in bright sunlight, even in winter.
Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar can dissolve cotton and bamboo fibres. Whilst a lot of reusable nappy websites recommend using them to sanitise and soften nappies, they will drastically shorten their lifespan and void your guarantee.
Barrier creams, such as Sudocrem and other oil-based products, can coat the fibres of the nappy and reduce their absorbency. Always use a liner if using a barrier cream.
Don't dry cloth nappies directly on radiators or similar. This can damage the waterproof fabric and elastic, affecting the functionality of your nappies.
