Why singing for baby is good for their development and your mind

Do you find yourself singing when changing your baby's cloth nappies? If you do you are not alone. From the moment you find out you are pregnant you start to talk to your growing bump, your voice is the first thing that your baby has to distinguish you as it’s mummy, and when they arrive, singing to your baby helps you to bond, but that’s not all. Research shows that singing to your baby can also help reduce crying, colic and maternal stress. It also helps keep your little monkey entertained while you switch them into their clean cloth nappies.

Singing has so many benefits; crouched by a cot side holding hands willing our little ones back to sleep, in those moments we know that the singing was distracting us from thinking about how tired we were and has a magic way of soothing the weariest of souls. In fact, research has proven that singing can aid recovery from postnatal depression. Researchers found that women who took part in group singing sessions with their babies experienced a much faster improvement in their symptoms than those who did not. The study was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry. See the full story on the BBC website.

There are some great music groups about too so check out your local area for yours.  They provide a wonderful space to meet other mums and babies and socialise and share your experiences and start their love of music early. You can also show off your baby’s cloth nappies there and help convert other parents over to cloth too ;-)

As you return to work or back to the madness of life, finding time to give your child some undivided attention can get harder. And even more so when a second baby appears, that time becomes even more precious.  Trying to share your attention fairly can be difficult, so having your older child help with changing the cloth nappies, will make it more fun and can be a great way to help a jealous or out of sorts older sibling, feel part of it.  Just watch as your eager to please 2 year old runs off to pick the Wheels on the Bus nappy for you, prompting a lovely little sing song.

We celebrate the beauty and simplicity of singing to our children in our new Songtime cloth nappies range and would love to see you sharing your song times together, tag us on IG or FB #totsbots
