A nappy is born…
TotsBots was born in 2000 not long after the birth of our second baby, Maia. We had used disposables with her older brother Kyle and had made the decision we just couldn’t go down that route again. We appreciated the convenience of disposables but at what cost?
Our research at the time made us come to a few conclusions:
- We had thrown a ridiculous amount of nappies to landfill
- It had cost us a lot of money.
- The reusable nappy we wanted wasn’t on the market… yet!
I designed and made Maia’s first nappies using an old towel and was so pleased with the result I ordered a 50 metre roll of towelling – much to Magnus’s horror but I don’t see him complaining now! I was amazed at how well my prototypes worked and soon our friends wanted some, they told their friends, who told their friends and it wasn’t long before we were well on our way to becoming the thriving business TotsBots is today.
Eight years later and Tots is still a family run business, although it is quite a different operation from the days when Magnus and I made the nappies at our kitchen table. Our nappies are now made in our factory in Glasgow by a great bunch of people who are totally committed to ensure our products reach you in tip top condition.
In May of 2007 we were blessed with the arrival of our third baby Darach. He is an absolute inspiration to us. Without his “help” our design team would never have been able to develop our latest generation of nappies and our award winning carrier The Papoozle. It’s a lot easier to get things right first time when you have your own little tester, and boy has he done some testing!
